Source: An easier colonoscopy - Medical Informatics Insider
A highly effective combination of tools used for finding polyps in the colon has been studied and approved by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This virtual colonoscopy is minimally invasive, takes about 15 minutes to perform, and has no risk of bleeding or perforating the colon. It is also less costly. This new procedure uses computer-aided detection (CAD) which offers another set of "eyes" after the radiologist views and interprets the 600 to 1,000 images produced. These polyps, if not removed, can develop into cancer.
"I think CAD is soon to become a mainstream technology," says Dr. Summers. Ronald M. Summers, M.D., Ph.D is staff radiologist, chief of the clinical image processing service and chief of the virtual endoscopy and computer-aided diagnosis laboratory at the NIH clinical center in Bethesda, MD.
